tough chic

So today’s challenge was to pair a masculine piece with feminine details. When I saw the inspiration photos on Pinterest, I thought for sure this would be a breeze…not so much. I was originally going to do cargo pants with a girly top and throw some heels/jewelry to it, but couldn’t find anything to work. So I decided to go a bit more out of my comfort zone and pair this military style jacket with a floral dress. I cinched the get-up with a belt to bring it all together and also polish it up a bit being that I wore it to work. So above is a dress from JC Penney, jacket from Forever 21, and a belt from New York & Co – all finds in my closet. I threw on my staple jewelry choices (more to venture out with) and some black wedge heels, but this totally could have been done with ballet flats too.

I will say in my first day of venturing out, I was concerned that I was not going to be comfortable. That could not be further from the truth! Getting out of my usual zone was actually pretty liberating and made me feel fab all day. I was sure that having a belt around me cinching all of this fabric was going to get old and it didn’t really bother me either. So I am now a full on believer in the stepping outside of your box and what it can do for your day.

To try this masculine/feminine gig out yourself, I have found some affordable goodies below to help with ideation. I stayed in the realm of masculine jacket with dress and cargo pant with blouse look. Be sure to remember that comfort is key. Blouses and dresses can be very comfortable if you choose what works best for you. So keep comfort in mind, but play around with this fun look – it is definitely a versatile one that will help you to be a bit dressed up while still able to get through your day no prob. And the best part of them is that you can easily dress this up with jewelry and heels or keep the jewelry simple and wear flats – your choice. Share your creations here - I can’t wait to check your duds out.

let’s do this.

This is me. A generally fun-loving person that adores fashion…good, bad and ugly. It’s all fascinating to me. There are a couple of things you really should know about me:

1. I love nothing more than hunting for a good deal. Sure, some things deserve good money. But, for the most part, I gain a lot of satisfaction knowing that I snagged a steal AND it looks great with the right additions.

2. I believe that the best thing you can ever do for your style is find a way to be comfortable while looking chic. Let’s face it, the gal that is confident and comfy is generally the hottest one around because it shows.

I would like to say that I love trying new things on a daily basis when it comes to my own attire. Yet, that would be a big fat fib. When it comes down to those last minutes to get ready, I tend to throw together something that just “works”. Well, I am saying goodbye to those boring days of ho hum and hello to the new days of fabulous discovery. I am going to dedicate this journey to not only finding ways to do this on the cheap, but also to rediscovering my closet and its contents. Lord knows there are some gems in there that have gotten buried and need to be found.

So my first challenge will be to conquer the masculine-feminine look..meaning making a masculine item look more feminine because let’s face it – I am a girly girl in so many ways. Here are a few photo examples that inspired this challenge that I found on Pinterest when pinning like a maniac. You can find the original source by clicking on each photo…they come from some great fashion bloggers. See you tomorrow when I am rocking it out masculine-feminine style.
